This was one of the books from our high schools AP Literature class.
I also read about it somewhere online.
I think it was – Books To Read Before You Die.
(no pun intended)
I was hooked by the first chapter.
It is a deeply moving novel.
The story centers around a black boy who is accused of manslaughter and sentenced to the electric chair.
I’m going to be honest with you …
You will cry.
It’s written from the perspective of a black school teacher who visits the boy in jail.
They develop a friendship and this is the basis of the story.
But it is so much more than that.
The book is about prejudices, family values and God.
I think the most difficult part for me when reading this book was realizing that we are still living in a world with so much prejudice.
The boy is at the wrong place at the wrong time and is falsely accused.
But his transformation in excepting his fate is more honorable than those who will live.
He also dies finding his faith and it is Jesus himself that gives him the strength to do this.
A remarkable book you must read.
