I heard “I have become comfortably numb” on the radio the other day. I haven’t heard Pink Floyd since I was a teenager. It got me to thinking about my life and the lives of many forty year olds like myself. Many of us are “comfortably numb”. We feel like we are just another “brick in the wall.” We think to ourselves “How can I make a difference? I have kids to raise, a spouse and a mortgage.” I find myself being “zapped” of my energy when I think like this. Maybe you do too? What I think or the conversations in my head have the power to energize me and make me feel alive or not. I have a choice in the matter. I feel like it is just a bad habit I have to break-the negative banter with myself. God sees everything we do however small. Each brick in this wall is important to the structure! Every one of us makes up humanity for the better or the worse! I challenge you this year to stretch! I’m not talking about physical exercise but doing something to stretch your being. This year I volunteered to help teach Kindergarden Catholic Education. I have really enjoyed being involved in my church on this new level. I have stretched myself in a new way. Maybe you have an elderly neighbor who would love a friendly hello and baked goods? It is really just about sticking yourself out there and doing something good for someone! You will be surprised how good you feel and alive!
