My son’s teacher is calling me.
She tells me my son has had a terrible week.
I already know this because we are having a terrible week also at home.
He is acting defiant.
He is mocking us.
She tells me she allows the students to keep a water bottle at their desk.
When they are not drinking it though she asks them to put the cap on it.
She tells me my son drank the whole bottle of water immediately so he would not have to put the cap on the bottle.
After I hang up the phone with her I talk to my son about the cap.
I tell him here is the analogy behind the cap.
I tell him putting the cap on the bottle of water is more about respect and less about the cap.
When he puts the cap on the bottle he shows his teacher he respects her.
I tell him here is a metaphor for putting the cap on the bottle.
(The cap is the butter)
People butter their bread to make it sweet.
I tell him if he makes his teacher happy by obeying her rules she will be nice to him.
Again, that is why he will put the cap on the bottle of water.
He looks interested.
He likes these words…
The next day he gets ready for school and I tell him to go to school and put the cap on the water bottle.
He says he doesn’t want to.
I tell him to put the cap on or he will not get to use his iPad after school.
And now I think he will put the cap on the water bottle today.
