We live in an age where we have more.
Pressure to be more.
To get more done.
We also have more anxiety.
Then there is also the genetic factor.
Some families are prone to anxiety.
They usually have a family history of it.
I brought my son to the neurologist many months ago when he was experiencing both verbal and motor tics.
This was a very stressful time for us all.
We did not know what was causing them and they were very severe.
School was difficult and his little body was worn down from the trauma – both physical and mental.
We saw Dr. V – not his real name : )
He was a wonderful man.
Kind and caring.
He was not the least bit annoyed.
You see when my son is in a new situation,
he will sometimes behave like a caged monkey at the zoo.
Picture this in your mind…
My son is jumping, running and climbing (the examination table) and he is calmly talking to me.
He asks if my son experiences any anxiety?
And I crack a joke that I am suffering from horrible anxiety.
We all laugh because things have not been so good.
I try to remain calm so my son will not panic.
I try to remain calm so I can gather information and make the best decision for my son.
I have had to make decisions that are very difficult.
I made a decisions to put my son on medicine (with the guidance of a doctor and therapist).
We have seen neurologists, pediatric psychologists, art therapists… you get the idea.
The path I find myself going down can make me very anxious.
I read an article that said your gut and mind are closely related and that is very true in my case.
I also read an article on breathing techniques and they really help me when I am feeling anxious.
I thought I would share them with you.
1. Close your eyes and find a comfortable seating position.
2. Inhale for 4 seconds.
3. Hold for 7 seconds.
5. Exhale for 8 seconds.
6. Brief pause.
Do this 10-12 times.
This is a wonderful technique.
You can even make a cue card and keep it in your purse to remind you of the steps.
I hope you will try this form of meditation when you are feeling anxious.
Wishing you more peace and less stress.
