My son is in trouble again.
His teacher tells me he won’t stop calling Jimmy a liar.
We tell him to stop calling Jimmy names.
His teacher tells him to stop.
I work one day in his classroom
and she tells me this is a problem
that won’t go away.
She tells me my son holds a grudge.
This goes on for weeks.
We don’t understand why he does this.
Jimmy used to be my friend he tells us.
And then one night right before he falls asleep,
he tells me Jimmy says he doesn’t want to play tag
and then after we choose someone to be it
he changes his mind.
(and joins in)
So Jimmy is never it.
My son takes tag very seriously.
There are rules to follow.
He tells me Jimmy also talks to people and when
they stop to listen he tags them.
I tell him Jimmy is not playing fair.
Jimmy is being a poor sport.
I explain what these words mean to my son.
He tells me he loves chatting with me.
He means he feels like I listened and finally understood.
He tells me thank-you.
So now he will no longer call Jimmy a liar.
Instead he will call him a poor sport.
He will tell him he is not playing fair.
And I think instead of an ending,
I have now given him a new beginning…
But I don’t think his teacher or Jimmy will like this.
