This was a very thought provoking read.
There was a lot of interesting history throughout the book.
The story begins on an island when a young girl is sent away because she shows the beginning signs of Lepresy or Hansens disease as it is referred to now.
She is only eight years old and sent to live with a community of lepers; many who are in the late stages of the disease.
In the book the nuns and priests care for the patients who become physically deformed and then eventually die.
At the time this book was written, there were thirty-one individuals living out their remaining life on the island in peace.
I was deeply moved by their inner strength and power of spirit.
A beautiful book.
