My son wants water.
He reminds me to give him filtered water.
Say please I tell him.
I do as he asks.
Last week I tried to trick him.
I gave him tap water to take to school.
When I see his teacher she tells me he doesn’t like his water.
She gives him bottled water to drink.
Later in the week he is at my neighbor’s house playing with his daughter.
My son asks for some water.
My neighbor gives him a bottle.
My son asks him if it’s filtered.
My neighbor tells him he doesn’t know.
He tells my son the water is from a spring.
My son decides spring water is okay.
Another day my neighbors wife is at my house.
I offer her water.
She see’s me getting it from the kitchen faucet.
She asks me if it’s safe.
And then one afternoon I am watering my garden.
I am thirsty.
I drink from the hose.
The water is cold.
I taste the minerals.
It brings back fond memories of childhood.
Summers in Minnesota.
Playing kick the can in the street and quenching our thirsts with water from a garden hose.
But then I start to worry.
I stop drinking the hose water.
Because it’s not filtered.
And I wonder to myself IS IT SAFE?
